[Opinions] Re: Thane and Thalia
in reply to a message by Andrew
I don't like either Thane or Thalia, and I'll try to explain why but if you decide to get hurt over it that's your problem and not mine. I don't think anybody really has to justify not liking the sound of a name any more than they should have to justify why they like strawberry but not blackberry, but here goes.
The th sound is unpleasant to my ear and mouth. I like very few names that contain the th sound. I don't like sounding or feeling like I'm hearing a lisp. Thane is like a lisped sane, and to me Thane is no more a person's given name than Viscount or squire.
Thalia is the name of the town in Larry McMurtry's Last Picture Show series of novels, which I very much enjoyed. Apparently there is an actual town in Texas called Thalia but it's not the one he used in his books. So it does have some significance to me as a place name, but the sound is not nice enough for a person's name.
Before you criticize a man, walk a mile in his shoes. That way, when you criticize him, you're a mile away and you have his shoes!
