In the US TV show The Office, Angela is called 'Monkey' by Dwight. My mother often calls people lamb or bunny out of affection, and I know a couple of little boys called Teddy or Bear when their names are unrelated. When they're no longer toddlers they can go back to their full names.

NNs are fun and one of the best thing about them is if a person doesn't like them later they could always reinvent themselves into their legal name or a different NN altogether. So to answer your question yes I think it's harmless and a little cute.
