I'm not exactly sure about the origins of these names, which is more common in which neighboring country or territory, as I've always been pretty neutral to them and never gave them much thought to begin with, but I far prefer the look of 'Eileen'

Aileen just never looked really right to me (though I am completely aware that it's a legitimate name and spelling) and it makes me think of the word, Alien as they both have the same letters. /:

Aileen is pronounced differently in Scotland so they are two names that sound different.

Eileen is EYE-leen and Aileen is AY-leen.

In the US the emphasis is on the second syllable so Eileen is eye-LEEN and Aileen is sometimes eye-LEEN, sometimes ay-LEEN etc. I think Aileen is confusing in the US.

I like Aileen (AY-leen) better. Eileen I prefer as eye-LEEN (not EYE-leen).

I personally don't associate the variants with geographic areas.

I prefer the look of Eileen. I've been thinking about Ilene a lot, lately -- it's a bit of a bastardization because it's informed by Irene, but I love how clean and pointy it looks.

I honestly like both a lot and pretty much equally. In the US, I definitely see Eileen most often, though. I wonder if Aileen would present more spelling and pronunciation challenges here.
