After spending his childhood in Massachusetts, Mason Keo-Van Daele moved to Texas for college and subsequently ended up working there, too. In his first year teaching literature, Mason met Tina in a book club that he started at the public library in town. She had some vastly differing opinion from him on some of the books and he liked that. He liked it so much that he asked her out on a date.
A few years later, they got married, moving into a small three bedroom house they bought with money they'd saved up. They wanted to start their family immediately. However, before Tina could get pregnant, they came across a young woman who didn't know what to do about her baby since she knew she didn't have the money to raise the child herself. On a whim, Tina said that they'd adopt the baby. Tina and Mason gave the girl a safe place to live until she gave birth, at which point, despite Tina's urging otherwise, the young woman walked away.
