Which do you prefer and which sounds the most timeless to you?

I prefer Margaret, but Mary seems more timeless to me.

Of the two, I prefer Mary. Not necessarily because I love Mary (it's sweet, but tired), so much as because I just... don't like Margaret. At all. It's the one "classic" I cannot warm up to. It's that "grit" sound I can't stand.
That said, I'd consider Margaret the more "timeless" of the two. This is because Mary is trending down (no longer in the Top 100), whereas Margaret actually seems to be picking up a little. Currently, Mary is directly above Margaret on the popularity charts, but I foresee next year that Margaret will surpass Mary for the first time since SSA collected data about names, and will therefore have more consistent popularity.

I honestly don't like either of these, they don't even seem that timeless to me, just old-fashioned. Like whenever I see there's a character named Mary in a book or movie (that isn't historically based) I always think "wow I guess they forgot to pick a name for the character and just used a filler, what a random choice" and whenever I see a Margaret I think "ok, so this person is supposed to be a a severe, miserable fuddy-duddy, I see". Both names are simultaneously generic and yet also have too many stereotypes attached to them to be truly "timeless" for me. Timeless (for me) is something like Anna or Julia.
If I *had* to pick on pain of death I guess I'd pick Margaret because I like the meaning and there are more opportunities to call her something that isn't Margaret.

I love them both. Mary is a family name and I used it as a mn for my daughter; Margaret is also a family name, and I like it very much, but the default nn for Margaret where I live is Margie, with the g as in gallop, not as in gin, and I don't like that at all; don't much like Maggie either. So it's more a nn issue than a name issue for me.

To be honest, I like them both very much!
That said, I’d go with Mary. I have it on my PNL, actually.
I like Margaret but I don’t really like any of its nicknames, and I feel a nickname would be inevitable for Margaret. Mary doesn’t have any obvious nicknames, nor does it need one and it’s a lovely name with dozens of great namesakes. It doesn’t sound hopelessly boring or uptight to me like it may to some others. I think it’d be extremely refreshing to meet a little Mary today.
