It was the name of one of my childhood Cabbage Patch dolls! I don’t mind it, but I actually prefer Bessie, which I find very sweet.

It's only slightly less bovine than Bessie.

I like Bess a lot. It might be my favourite Elizabeth nickname. It's adorable but also has an archness about it, like Bess does no harm but takes no sh*t.

I actually kind of love it. It has become one of my favorite Elizabeth derivatives, mainly because you hear it much less often. I'll admit, I once found it clunky and dowdy. But I'd happily use it now. And probably as a stand alone since Elizabeth kind of bores me.

Bess has always felt like the heaviest nickname for Elizabeth. It just kind of falls out of my mouth like a rock. I much prefer Beth, Betty Bessie, etc. The only Elizabeth nn I dislike more is Liz, and even then Liz has more life and spark.

It’s my least favorite nickname for Elizabeth. It would be awful on its own.

I rate Bess 2/10.
It is nicknamey and also dated in my opinion. I can imagine an old, sad aunt named Bess.

Good Queen?
My mother, Beatrice, collected a few strange nns: one friend always called her Bess. So I was quite accustomed to it, didn't give it much thought at all but it was OK. My daughter, also Beatrice, knows lots of stories about her grandmother but not that one. She found that if she phoned in to radio shows (she was at the age for doing it!), the DJ or whoever tended to find her name unfamiliar. So she took to calling herself Bess, and it worked well.
