[Facts] Sourmelina
This name appears in Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides, and I noticed that there is not an entry for it on BtN. It's a Greek name. If anyone knows anything about it I would appreciate any information you might have. Thanks.

The only other use of the name I could find is in Nikos Kazantzakis's "Report to Greco". I doubt he made it up but there's no etymology or any other mention of Sourmelina except for an Airbnb listing claiming that it's also the name of a character in another Nikos Kazantzakis book that I'm pretty sure was only referred to as "the widow".
I also searched for Surmela and couldn't find anything.

I think the name might have been created for the book, as when I Googled the name, pretty much every result had to do with the book you mentioned.
On the other hand, Melina is a real Greek name.

Not knowing the first thing about the book, I'd assume it was a pun on semolina.
Oh, it's a great book. Definitely one of my top favorites.
