I like it. I'd assume it was for a boy and named after Ralph Waldo Emerson.
ETA: The only -son names that I can easily see on a girl are the ones already popular for girls, like Allison and Madison. Emerson has the nickname Emmy but I think that could be cute for a boy too, it just depends on the person. I think Emmy on a boy wouldn't last beyond puberty while Emmy on a girl could last a long time.
