[Opinions] Hermione
Today's Name of the Day is Hermione. WDYT?I'll basically condense here what I posted for my comment on the name upon seeing it today, which is that I cannot believe the first Harry Potter book came out when I was only 6 years old! When I started reading the books, Hermione was a completely foreign name to me. Harry and Ron, all right I've seen those names plenty of times. Draco is kind of cool, even though the character's a jerk. Neville is classic stodgy Brit (Neville Chamberlain being my main other association). "But what the heck is Hermione?" I thought. I even misread the name as "Hermoine" (her-MOYN, which is very bad) for years, before realizing the I was before the O! Haha - then I kept pronouncing the name as her-mee-OWN until the movies came out and the epiphany occurred: her-MIE-uh-nee.While the name is very attached to the character, being attached to a fictional character is not always a bad thing. And the series certainly normalized a formerly very strange name - although it would certainly be humorous if a real-life bearer wasn't studious at all!***Please rate my personal name lists:www.behindthename.com/pnl/69381

It’s a very beautiful name, though the Harry Potter association is way too strong for me to ever want to use it.

This name is awful.

I like it. I wouldn't use it, but I do like it. It's nice that this strange name has become normalised in the average person's mind, and would know instinctively how to read and pronounce it.

It's nice, but it is so connected to academics/intelligence that anyone who wasn't a straight A student named Hermione would be a bit odd. Can you imagine a Hermione in a mini skirt, smoking, who skips school and dyes her hair purple? It just doesn't really fit many personalities. I still like it and would like to see it used. Then it would be more approachable. It actually went as high up as #200-something in the UK.I love Lily, out of the other Harry Potter names.

I can’t really separate it from the character but then she’s definitely not the worst character around.

I love the name. My first association with the name was the film Gigi with the actress Hermione Gingold playing the grandmother. I also did Latin and a lot of Shakespeare at school including A Winters Tale. During Latin as well as learning the language we looked at Roman and Greek myths and legends. As a result I had plenty of associations with the name before the first book which was released when I was 13. If I met a child called Hermione HP wouldn’t be my first thought.

I think it's a wonderful name, but I think most people would assume it's after the Harry Potter character. The association with Hermes is neat.

Of course the HP connection is there and strong, however Hermione has a long history prior to it, and is a really gorgeous name imo. I imagine Hermione would fit and grow with the person, and be more associated with them to people who know them as opposed to the character.

There’s a Hermione at the music class my son goes to. It’s a good name, doesn’t seem strange at all on a real life person.

This is reassuring!

I’m not a Harry Potter fan but I like it.

Well it's my youngest daughters name. Surprisingly there's a whole lot of people who don't know much about harry Potter and don't get the association.
I almost didn't use the name because of the HP connection but I'm really glad we did because it's such a lovely name and I think it suits her really well.

Now this is surprising! I would've thought the cultural impact was pervasive, even if people didn't actually read the books or watch the movies. Out of curiosity, has she run into any difficulties at school with the name?

I think there’s too much of an association with Hermione Granger, everyone would assume you named your child/character/pet after her, not just for the name. I always (and still do) pronounce it Her-my-nee, it’s close enough, right?

I can't agree. And I don't understand why anyone who knows the correct version of/way to do anything will persist with the wrong way. It makes no sense. Everybody is stupid in some ways, but why appear more stupid than you already are? It makes no sense. Unless it's a way to start a conversation? But there must be many others.
