[Opinions] Gemma
WDYT of Gemma? What would you use as a middle name? What would you name a brother and sister?

I was just thinking of Gemma a week ago. I really like it and the nn Gem. Having said that, there's something I don't like about the name when I say it and I certainly don't care for how close in sound it is to the very common Emma. I'd be more inclined to use it for a pet which I think would be adorable.
As for a sib set, I think I'd likely use other Italian names such as Leo and Francesca / Gabriella / Marina / Natalia or something that would blend in well where I live and not be too OTT.

Overambitious; succeeds only in being cheap and nasty.
I think it's ok. I think it brims pleasantly. The "G" gives it a kind of underwater quality. Sounds like "Brim" and "Glimmer" and "Gem" so it sounds shiny.
wow, can't do combos or siblings tonight ha!

Love Gemma! I’ve always loved this name and don’t even mind the Jemma spelling! I know, not the “correct” spelling, but I like it. I do prefer Gemma though. I think Gemma Rose, though very predictable, is beautiful sounding. I also enjoy Gemma Ruby, Gemma Pearl, Gemma Opal, Gemma Sapphire, Gemma Cleo, Gemma Phoebe, Gemma Elizabeth, Gemma Eve, Gemma Evelyn, Gemma Romi / Romy, Gemma Felicity, Gemma Kate, Gemma Lucy, Gemma Zoe, Gemma Clementine, Gemma Celeste and Gemma Willow.
As for siblings, that all depends on what style the parents are after. Some names I think would work well are Jasper, Kai, Levi, Oliver, Isaac, Thomas, Rex, Samuel, Seth, Darcy,

A good college friend of mine had a poster of Gemma Atkinson in his dorm, so that's who the name makes me think of. I don't particularly like it, but it's better than Emma. I'd name a brother and sister Nathan and Lucy.
I find it pleasant and fun but I probably wouldn’t use it. Too close to Emma and maybe a little bit too playful of a name for my taste? Hard to say what exactly my problem is, but I do like it for someone else.
Cheating because it’s in the thread right below this, but I could see it paired with Holly actually. Another nature-adjacent but not super nature-y, fun name. Maybe Summer or Autumn are also on that same wavelength. Having more trouble thinking of a boy name to pair it with.

I feel like I should love this name but I don’t. It’s okay, but it’s not my favorite.
Ok, so I don't know anyone named Gemma so I might be talking out of my ass, but I have read an awful lot of British chick lit. That reading material has given me the feeling that Gemma is kind of dated 80s there like Ashley is here.
I'm also not big on the Gem part. It makes the name feel flashy and the G beginning takes away the softness that Emma has.

I'd say you are spot on with how Gemma is viewed in the UK. It was very trendy in the 80s. I know several.
Agree.
I like it but I dislike the nickname Gem. I'd only use it in its full form. It sounds a bit dated because it is so close to Emma. And I might be in the minority here but Emma is starting to sound teenaged to me or young adult (up until 35 or so) and not like a name for kids or babies anymore. Gemma feels a bit older even.
I heard that in the UK it is really really dated and seen as a bit tacky. At least those were responses I got when I asked about it years ago.
I wouldn't use a word name. Gemma Rose or Gemma Jade sound...a bit trendy and stripper-ish to be honest. It needs a really classic, long name to balance it out. Gemma Beatrice, Gemma Caroline, Gemma Evangeline.
I'd just use my favorite names with it. Gemma and Lily or Gemma and Eilidh or Gemma and Isla. Gemma and Conall.

It's ok
I’ve always thought it looked really made-up, like someone just took the word "gem" and slapped an A on the end of it to make a name. I don’t like it.
For a sibling, I dunno. Hugo?
