I have learned something new. I had no idea this was a real name at all. I certainly didn't know it was a nickname for Hugh. I thought it was pronounced like the first syllable of "sugar" and was perhaps a shortened version of that used as a term of endearment. Imagine my surprise.
Probably because it is (or was at some time in the past) rhyming with Hugh in the Scots language. We see other rhyming nicknames in English, like Peggy for Margaret (Meggy) or Polly for Mary (Molly).--elbowin
This is very similar to my great grandmother's maiden surname- Schug... I've seen it variously misspelled as Shug or Shugg before. I have no idea of any possible real correlation between the two names though, let alone with the name Hugh
