It's a name that I never thought of before it gained massive popularity, so I can't divorce it from that. I'm just really really tired of it and I don't know what I'd think if I thought about it at some time in the past when it wasn't and never had been popular.
Okay, I kind of know. In 1975, when I was fifteen, I used to babysit a little girl named Ashley, who was then four, so born in 1971. That was when the name was rising but wasn't really popular yet. The baby sister was named Whitney. I just thought, "Oh Mrs. B. likes to give her daughters masculine names that sound kind of feminine." The name didn't make much of an impression on me at that time. So it's still true that I didn't really try to evaluate it until I was aware of its popularity.
I dunno, something about it has always bugged me, but I can't put my finger on what it is.
