May is my middle name and I like it well enough (sort of cutesy but at least it's an actual word and has some nice spring imagery).
Mae seems too cutesy, it's either a hyperfeminine little girl or an old country grandma and nothing in between.
Mei is good, it sounds youthful to me but I don't know what it actually sounds like in Japan.
Mai is okay, but it makes me think of Maia and that looks more complete. Mai also doesn't seem as young as Mei to me.
