I like it, but it sounds a little too gruff for a young kid. It would be a great middle name though. It makes me think of the mythological creature. I don't think Griff is inevitable, Griffin is already pretty short.
I also like Gryphon because it looks more medieval, but people would probably assume it was Griffin.

(I also have a hard time remembering the difference between "Griffin" and "Griffith" because they both just make me think of griffins. There's a street in my city called one of those things and I still don't know which one it is!)
