I like the name Griffin, it does remind me of the mythological creature but I don't mind that about it. Griff as a nickname seems probable but not inevitable. Despite having grown up reading Harry Potter it really doesn't bring up anything to do with it, not sure why. I'm kind of embarrassed to admit it but for me the strongest association is actually Griffin McElroy who is on a couple podcasts including a comedy "advice" show and one where he and family members record DnD gameplay, but that's probably just since I've been hyperfixating on it recently and I'd figure it's safe to assume that's not commonplace for just anyone hearing the name.
