Sounds like a surname or a caricature of a grumpy old man to me.
There's a girl youtuber called Merphy and it confuses me to no end why her parents thought that was a good idea :P

I like it. I think it has a laidback humble old man vibe. Kind of like Francis "Fran", Maurice, or Russell do, to me.

I can only think of Murphy's law. It's very surnamey and more suitable for a pet.

I dislike lnfns unless they are family lns, in which case I expect them to appear in the mn slot. I've got zilch against the genuinely Irish, but fake Oirishness isn't for me, and a Murphy used to be a potato, I think. So, on the whole, no!

Not a fan. I don't like the sound. I don't dislike all surnames as first names but this one I don't like it.

It sounds like a dog's name. Especially an Irish terrier or some other Irish dog. Probably called Murph.

It's always had a sort of cartoon / puppyish vibe for me. Because of the sound, maybe? I don't know what the association is.
It's one of the surnames I'd pick, if I were trying to think of one that sounded stereotypically Irish.

I can't think of it as anything but a girl's name, thanks to Murphy Brown. For a boy...eh. It's a little too cutesy, to me. Like the name of an adorable Muppet, or something.
