[Opinions] Usable variant of Sopater for modern American character
I have a fun idea bubbling in my head, that I want to see what I can do here. I thought this was a neat character name, since it's a rather obscure Biblical name, and it has a great meaning. "Safety of the Father". I want it to sound usable on a modern person though, and Sopater sounds way too nerdy and strange. The thing that I want to do is create a variant from the elements, "Sos" and "patris" somehow. I'm thinking of Sopris maybe? I'd love some ideas for this

If you mean god is the father, try hebrew names,
Sopater, Sosipater [Sŏp'atûr, Sōsĭp'a tûr]—of good parentage or defends his father. A Christian of Berea who accompanied Paul from Greece to Asia on his way to Syria. Mention of his father’s name, Pyrrhus, RV, unusual in the New Testament, may suggest that he was of noble birth. As a kinsman or fellow countryman of Paul, Sopater joined him in sending salutations to the saints (Acts 20:4; Rom. 16:21).

Oh some nice ideas there. Patrisos is a cool name, but I want the S in the beginning. Sotiris is a really great one! I wish it still had the "father" meaning in it though. I thought of something like "Patrick" too, but not sure how to do it. I think it's the "Sop" in the beginning that makes it tough. If I spell it like Sotripas I think that's a bit better. I want the "P" to stay in there, and I love Sotiris as well.
Thank you!

I find Sopris worse than Sopater, actually. And I think any variant would be, because it's just so much more involved. Sopater has an easy background: "My parents are really into obscure Biblical names. These are my siblings Osnapper and Keren-happuch." Some people are like that. Making up a whole new variant wholecloth? That's weird. Do you want this for a specific, existing character? If not... well, just use Sopater as is and give it to a character who is a little needy and/or weird.
The real problem with Sopater, though, isn't that it's nerdy and weird but that it kinda sounds like Soap Eater. But you're not likely to completely remove this problem trying to make a new variant with these same sounds.
