[Opinions] Vanessa
I stated before that I have been reading a lot about Virginia Woolf and her family, especially her sister Vanessa Bell. I recently discovered how much I love Vanessa. Thoughts about the name?It seems slightly dated but not overly so.

Even though it’s dated some, I really like it.

It's beautiful and elegant. I have nothing negative to say about it, except even though it's only slightly dated now, it will become more dated as time goes on. That's how it works. The only Vanessa I've ever known was in my high school class, so she'd be aged 59, 60, or 61 now.

There's something off about the name, something that bothered me, and I was hoping that posting here would help me figure it out. It did, thankfully.Manipura hit the nail on the head. It's like Valerie - a gorgeous name that ended up dated. on one hand I see Vanessa and Valerie is glamorous 1920s women, on the other I see middle-aged women who are grumpy or trying too hard to hold on to their looks.

I want to like it more than I do.I've been called Vanessa before (because of people mixing up V names), and it wasn't terrible, but I didn't like it much. I actually prefer the time I was called Virginie. Vanessa felt dated and kind of vanilla, like Hannah vaguely but 10 years older. Or it's like Melissa - dated, pleasant enough, but...very soft in a way I don't identify with. And at the same time, it feels a bit catty. Like, I can imagine Tiffany, Vanessa, and Nikki being spiteful to each other.

Thank you so much. You've put your finger on what has been bothering me with the name. It is like Hannah, just slightly older. And it definitely has a catty feeling. It's unfortunate because it has such a neat history.
