Ugh. One of the first surnames to ride the trend wave. It’s dated now. It’s also one of those perpetual toddler names that I have a really hard time picturing it on a professional adult.

I see Riley as a masculine name only, although I can see why some would consider it unisex.

I don’t mind it for either gender. Sometimes I prefer it on a girl, sometimes a boy. I’ve known both a girl and boy with this name.

On girls it's a super trendy, perpetual toddler and yet way too masculine name no matter how it's spelled.
On boys it's handsome, a bit youthful but it's easy to see it working from infant to elder.

Ugh. I'd like to take every surname that someone somewhere thought had a pretty sound so they slapped it on a girl and take that name and stomp it to death.
This particular one I don't like for a boy either. It has a smart-alecky vibe.

Riley is a name we have across both our boys and girls lists. I've always only liked it on a boy; in fact I've never met a little female Riley in real life (I'm from and grew up in England, only recently moving to the US, so that might explain it). My husband liked Riley in the combo Benjamin Riley but also likes it for a girl so I've warmed up to it on a girl too.

Although I prefer it as boys name, I think it works well as a girls name as well.
It has a nice sound.
I always think Reilly & Rhys, Riley & Reese make a nice match.
