Samantha was my birth name and I changed it because I absolutely loathed being called Sam or Sammy, which were unavoidable. So my perspective might be slightly biased.
I don't think there is anything wrong with the name, I'd be surprised to meet one under 20 it seems very late 80's/90's to me.
I don't like Sam for girls, you might be able to get away with Manny or Annie as a nickname.
