It's always been in steady use here in South Africa - probably not for the last 20 years or so, but still it's a name I grew up with. I've always liked it, and since my two closest guy friends are Ians (and are each other's best friends too), I've got nothing but positive associations with it. I suggested it for our son, but DH's sister had recently divorced a very nice Ian so it didn't seem tactful. If we'd had anothr son, I'd have held out for it.
