The apothecary shop was burgled! Thankfully they didn’t take many of the valuable herbs, tinctures, or medicinal compounds so it shouldn’t affect their business overmuch. They did, however, nab a particularly nasty poison. Thierry’s hoping the burglar was either pressed for time or couldn’t read and just grabbed whatever they could and does not know what they now possess. That would be better than the other theory, that the poison was their main goal and the rest grabbed to make it look like a sloppy thievery. Time may tell!

This year the family “invested” in a pet cat to catch mice at the shop (Sebastian showed up with the little street kitten and they didn’t have the heart to turn her out again). She’s a gray and dark-striped female, and they named her Lili.

The shop was robbed again! This time another deadly poison was amongst the missing items and now the Louets know they are being targeted for nefarious purposes. They’ve invested in some serious padlocks on their door and a locking metal gate for their garden.

Thierry and Clare have had another son! They named him Corantin, as he was born during a storm. Corantin shares Clare’s frizzy hair, though it’s brown, and her light blue eyes. The couple is very happy, as they were worried that perhaps they were not able to have more children since it had been so long. Likely, it was merely the stress and busy-ness with the shop the past few years.

This year a merchant has arrived with goods from the far east, bringing some rare items that will be excellent additions at the shop and valuable for making medicines and popular potions.
-- Sebastian has showed some early interest in music, and so his parents bought him a third-hand violin to begin playing with. He surprised them by sounding fairly good right away and even creating a few little tunes. They’re looking for a local teacher for him, hoping that he has promise and could one day play at the royal court.

The closed the shop for the day to attend Clarette’s sister Jeanne’s wedding, a pleasant diversion and good chance to spend some time with family.

Another son, Mathieu, has arrived for the Louets! He has Thierry’s curly hair, which is the same golden blonde as Clarette’s, and also has her ice-blue eyes.

Our family was in the news recently. The mayor of the town was apparently cured of an unnamed affliction which his butler said was procured at Louet Apothecary. Business has since been brisk and money thankfully following it.

Clarette was hoping for a girl this time, but she’ll just have to lavish her love on another baby boy! Alexandre was born on Christmas Eve, for which he was given the middle name Noel. Little Alex has mom’s frizzy hair in dad’s rich, dark brown shade, and also has pale blue eyes.
-- Corantin has taken to wanting to help Clarette in the kitchen more than doing chores in the shop. This suits her just fine since apparently she can’t seem produce a darn daughter to help her!

Somehow Thierry got roped into competing in a tooth-pulling contest (good for business he says, if a bit gauche). He won, pulling 48 teeth from afflicted townsfolk in a half hour. He was awarded a certificate of proficiency from the mayor and a bag of coin. Clarette begrudgingly admits that this notoriety has seemed to bring in more customers, though not always of the quality she thinks they should aspire for.

Two juvenile magpies, a male and a female, have joined the Louet family. Thierry picked them up thinking they’d make good guardbirds for the shop, and the boys love their beautiful, irridescent feathers and teaching the smart birds tricks. They named after the couple in a poem Clarette loves, "Erec et Enide". (note: according to thoughtco, it’s “the earliest extant Arthurian romance by 12th-century poet Chrétien de Troyes. In it, Erec wins a tournament to defend the assertion that his lady is the most beautiful. Later, the two go on a quest to prove to each other their noble qualities.”) Lili gets along with them surprisingly well (or rather, she’s happy that they seem to tolerate and present a chummy curiosity about her rather than wanting to gang up on her).

Finally, it’s a girl! Little Emmelot was given the appropriately jubilant middle name Victoire in celebration of her arrival. She has curly, golden blonde hair and Thierry’s brown eyes.
-- Mathieu has become quite the little herbalist himself, collecting plants alongside Thierry when he’s working in the garden. His father is hopeful that he’ll want to take over the shop someday, as Sebastian is excelling at violin and likely to move to the city as soon as possible to pursue his musical career. Likewise, Corentin seems to have little interest still in the shop. When Emmelot was born he swore that he’ll surely be able to cook better than her, and his mother assured him that there’s plenty of time between now and then, so he needn’t worry about losing his place at the hearth as there’s much to do around the house.

Clarette has had another child and, yes, it’s another son – their fifth! Romain has her frizzy hair, though he takes after his father with dark brown locks and brown eyes.
-- Alexandre also has musical talents, though his instrument is his own. He has the loveliest voice and has just begun singing in the boys’ choir at church.

Clarette surprised Thierry with the news that she was with child again not long after Romain was born (quicker than normal for them, historically) and so they have just welcomed their second daughter! Ysabeau has Clare’s frizzy, golden blonde hair and has hazel eyes like her older brother Sebastian.

Two tragedies have befallen the Louet family this year. Romain fell while climbing the garden gate and broke one of ankles and leg under the knee, and broke the other leg at the thigh. Thierry set the bones as well as he could, even calling in a doctor from the city to help, but the doctor syas he will either always have a severe limp and need crutches to aid his walking, or be rendered lame altogether. Thierry has been staying up all ours making medicines for him to aid his healing, determined that he be able to walk. The other sadness is the loss of their dear cat and brave little mouser, Lili, who died of old age by the fire, being stroked and surrounded by her family’s tears.

It’s been another tough year for our family. There is a drought and many of the plants in the garden have withered, hindering their ability to make what they need for the apothecary and causing the family to have to buy more from traders to supplement and keep business going, all of which is taking a financial toll.
-- In happier news, Emmelot has begun to take up drawing as a pastime and is quite the little artist, cheering everyone up with her small pictures.

Sebastian has become even more skilled at his music over the years and has started a new profession as a minor violinist at court as everyone had hoped he would. The future is looking bright for him, especially as he has also been married this year! He met Madeleine at court and was struck by her beauty (she has curly, black hair and green eyes) and enchanted by their witty conversation. She was taken with his talent and the brave glint in his hazel eyes underneath his not-quite-shy demeanor. He thought he would have no chance at Madeleine’s hand, but found out that her family was aspiring – rather than prestigious – like his (her father is a gardener, though not the gardener, at the palace) and so was emboldened to ask for her hand. Her father – and she – accepted and the two families were happily united.

The family attends a reunion, this time of Clarette’s Restault side, and return just in time to celebrate the arrival of Sebastian and Madeleine’s…..
- Fraternal twins! To the surprise and delight of all, the still-newlyweds have had a daughter and son in one go. Valentine’s hair is frizzy like Sebastian’s with her mother’s black hue, while Thomas has Madeleine’s curly locks but golden blonde like his father’s. Both babies have their mother’s gorgeous green eyes.
-- Romain, now five, enjoys playing in the garden, which has been slowly restored to its former robustness in the years following the drought. Though he can walk now thanks to his parent’s attentive care while he was mending, he unfortunately does so with difficulty and as predicted only with crutches, and so spends most of his time amongst the plants and small creatures, helping his father and Mathieu (who remains fascinated by plants and is now learning his father’s craft of herbalism) as he can.

There was a riot in the Louet family’s town! Thankfully, they are all safe.
- Also to be thanked for, the “city” Louet’s have had another child, a son! Gabriel has his mother’s curly, black hair and brown eyes like his grandfather Thierry.
-- Ysabeau is also an artistic little soul, and loves to dance and sing (though Alexandre’s voice is still the prized one of the family. He is still a member of the boys’ choir where he is sometimes honored enough to travel to the city cathedral to sing.).

A traveling band of minstrels and jesters have arrived in town and the whole family went to see them, having a wonderful time. Corantin even caught the eye of a young lady in the crowd – perhaps something will come of it!
- Madeleine has given birth for the third time in three years, this time to another daughter! Ellaine has Sebastian’s frizzy, golden blonde hair and ended up with lovely dark blue eyes.

Corantin has accomplished something great! He has moved to the city and is now apprenticing with a prestigious chef who is known to supply food to the palace. It’s fortunate that he is able to live with Sebastian and his family while he saves up enough money for his own lodgings, though he is not there much because of the demands of his work.
- Madeleine is pick-pocketed while out picking up groceries, distracted by wrangling three toddlers and holding a baby. She and the children were unharmed, however, which is all Sebastian and her family care about though.

There is a minor epidemic in the town. Clarette, Emmelot, and Romain are all taken sick, but begin to rally again amid Thierry’s ministrations. Tragically, Clarette takes another turn for the worse and passes away. Sebastian and his family travel back for her funeral. Thierry is overwrought with grief and Mathieu is taking on most of the work at the apothecary while he tries to cope with his wife’s death.
- Sebastian and Corantin had an argument over traveling back home for the funeral. Corantin said it was a bad time at work, there being a feast in two days at the palace, whereupon Sebastian slapped him and called him an ungrateful wretch who better gather his damn things and show up to the house by that evening to leave or he would make sure he didn’t have a tongue to taste food with. Corantin was waiting at the carriage that night and attended the funeral (he was glad he did, of course), but tensions were still high between the brothers especially amidst their grief, and Corantin moved out of the house shortly after they returned to the city. Madeleine told Sebastian not to be distressed, that time would heal things between them once their tempers and stress over their mother’s loss had abated.

There is fear of war with England and all that seemed secure at one time in the town is shaken up, made seemingly worse for the Louet family by Clarette’s absence.
- In the city, Gabriel becomes ill with a fever, but recovers after a few weeks.
--- The twins are continuing to become their own little people. Valentine is enthralled with language and has convinced her father to teach her to read already, while Thomas is enchanted by animals and takes every chance he can to play with or rescue them.
Family end-of-the years roundup:
Thierry is still grieving for Clarette and doesn’t intend to marry again. He takes solace and delight in is children and grandchildren, as well as his work as always, though he is beginning give Mathieu more responsibilities in the apothecary shop in preparation for taking over for him in the coming years.
Sebastian and Madeleine are enjoying their place at court and their family. They’re happy with the number of children that they have, and aren’t attempting to have more, but the future will tell on that score. They are after all still young and in love and, well, babies happen.
Madeleine was right, and the two eldest Louet brothers patched things up. This was aided by another female influence…Madeleine’s sister Symonne, whom Corantin met when she was visiting and fell hard for (she has wavy, black hair and hazel eyes). He recognized in her a fellow artist, he with food and she with paint (though her family are gardeners she aspires to be a portraitist) and she cautiously-then-all-at-once fell for his bravado-y charm, and of course his cooking, and the pair just became engaged!
Mathieu is capable in the shop and loves the work as much as his father. He’s fascinated as well by all of the progress in medicine going on, much of which he’s discussed with the doctor’s son, Laurent, a young medical student of nineteen (with an arresting contrast of wavy, white-blonde hair and the darkest black eyes) whom he spends time with often, when he can. He hopes to be as good of an apothecary as Thierry and hopefully have a life full of love like his parents as well.
Alexandre decided not to become a eunuch to continue singing in the boys’ choir, but wants to continue singing and is thinking of either becoming a musical director (which might mean becoming a priest) or minstrel. Either sound good at this point, though his hormones are leading him toward minstrel. His siblings think he’ll land somewhere at neither extreme, probably on the stage.
Emmelot still draws, though she won’t be pursuing painting like her soon-to-be sister-in-law, Symonne. She’s happy to help her father and siblings around the house and is hoping to become a mother someday to a large family like her own, like her own dear mother who held everything together with strength and love.
Romain still enjoys the garden, and as he’s getting older and experiencing the sometimes meanness from other children in town, prefers it to going out in general. His father makes him exercise, though, and he continues to gain strength as he gets older, and he helps out as much as he can. He’s hoping to assist Mathieu with the shop in the future, and Mathieu likewise is interested in devising a devise that will help Romain get around better while still being mobile enough to do what he wants. Romain, loving nature and wildlife as he does, is the primary caretaker for the family’s magpies, who are firmly attached to him.
Ysabeau, the littlest, is starting to grow up, though her father hopes she doesn’t grow up too soon. She reminds him a lot of Clare. She’s spunky and still dances around, lighting up the family and making them laugh.

The apothecary shop was burgled! Thankfully they didn’t take many of the valuable herbs, tinctures, or medicinal compounds so it shouldn’t affect their business overmuch. They did, however, nab a particularly nasty poison. Thierry’s hoping the burglar was either pressed for time or couldn’t read and just grabbed whatever they could and does not know what they now possess. That would be better than the other theory, that the poison was their main goal and the rest grabbed to make it look like a sloppy thievery. Time may tell!

The couple is very happy, as they were worried that perhaps they were not able to have more children since it had been so long. Likely, it was merely the stress and busy-ness with the shop the past few years.

This year a merchant has arrived with goods from the far east, bringing some rare items that will be excellent additions at the shop and valuable for making medicines and popular potions.
-- Sebastian has showed some early interest in music, and so his parents bought him a third-hand violin to begin playing with. He surprised them by sounding fairly good right away and even creating a few little tunes. They’re looking for a local teacher for him, hoping that he has promise and could one day play at the royal court.

Clarette was hoping for a girl this time, but she’ll just have to lavish her love on another baby boy! Alexandre was born on Christmas Eve, for which he was given the middle name Noel. Little Alex has mom’s frizzy hair in dad’s rich, dark brown shade, and also has pale blue eyes.
-- Corantin has taken to wanting to help Clarette in the kitchen more than doing chores in the shop. This suits her just fine since apparently she can’t seem produce a darn daughter to help her!

Somehow Thierry got roped into competing in a tooth-pulling contest (good for business he says, if a bit gauche). He won, pulling 48 teeth from afflicted townsfolk in a half hour. He was awarded a certificate of proficiency from the mayor and a bag of coin. Clarette begrudgingly admits that this notoriety has seemed to bring in more customers, though not always of the quality she thinks they should aspire for.

Two juvenile magpies, a male and a female, have joined the Louet family. Thierry picked them up thinking they’d make good guardbirds for the shop, and the boys love their beautiful, irridescent feathers and teaching the smart birds tricks. They named after the couple in a poem Clarette loves, "Erec et Enide". (note: according to thoughtco, it’s “the earliest extant Arthurian romance by 12th-century poet Chrétien de Troyes. In it, Erec wins a tournament to defend the assertion that his lady is the most beautiful. Later, the two go on a quest to prove to each other their noble qualities.”) Lili gets along with them surprisingly well (or rather, she’s happy that they seem to tolerate and present a chummy curiosity about her rather than wanting to gang up on her).

Finally, it’s a girl! Little Emmelot was given the appropriately jubilant middle name Victoire in celebration of her arrival. She has curly, golden blonde hair and Thierry’s brown eyes.
-- Mathieu has become quite the little herbalist himself, collecting plants alongside Thierry when he’s working in the garden. His father is hopeful that he’ll want to take over the shop someday, as Sebastian is excelling at violin and likely to move to the city as soon as possible to pursue his musical career. Likewise, Corentin seems to have little interest still in the shop. When Emmelot was born he swore that he’ll surely be able to cook better than her, and his mother assured him that there’s plenty of time between now and then, so he needn’t worry about losing his place at the hearth as there’s much to do around the house.

Clarette surprised Thierry with the news that she was with child again not long after Romain was born (quicker than normal for them, historically) and so they have just welcomed their second daughter! Two tragedies have befallen the Louet family this year. Romain fell while climbing the garden gate and broke one of ankles and leg under the knee, and broke the other leg at the thigh. Thierry set the bones as well as he could, even calling in a doctor from the city to help, but the doctor syas he will either always have a severe limp and need crutches to aid his walking, or be rendered lame altogether. Thierry has been staying up all ours making medicines for him to aid his healing, determined that he be able to walk. The other sadness is the loss of their dear cat and brave little mouser, Lili, who died of old age by the fire, being stroked and surrounded by her family’s tears.

It’s been another tough year for our family. There is a drought and many of the plants in the garden have withered, hindering their ability to make what they need for the apothecary and causing the family to have to buy more from traders to supplement and keep business going, all of which is taking a financial toll.

Sebastian has become even more skilled at his music over the years and has started a new profession as a minor violinist at court as everyone had hoped he would. The future is looking bright for him, especially as he has also been married this year! He met Madeleine at court and was struck by her beauty (she has curly, black hair and green eyes) and enchanted by their witty conversation. She was taken with his talent and the brave glint in his hazel eyes underneath his not-quite-shy demeanor. He thought he would have no chance at Madeleine’s hand, but found out that her family was aspiring – rather than prestigious – like his (her father is a gardener, though not the gardener, at the palace) and so was emboldened to ask for her hand. Her father – and she – accepted and the two families were happily united.

The family attends a reunion, this time of Clarette’s Restault side, and return just in time to celebrate the arrival of Sebastian and Madeleine’s…..
- Fraternal twins! To the surprise and delight of all, the still-newlyweds have had a daughter and son in one go. Valentine’s hair is frizzy like Sebastian’s with her mother’s black hue, while Thomas has Madeleine’s curly locks but golden blonde like his father’s. Both babies have their mother’s gorgeous green eyes.
-- Romain, now five, enjoys playing in the garden, which has been slowly restored to its former robustness in the years following the drought. Though he can walk now thanks to his parent’s attentive care while he was mending, he unfortunately does so with difficulty and as predicted only with crutches, and so spends most of his time amongst the plants and small creatures, helping his father and Mathieu (who remains fascinated by plants and is now learning his father’s craft of herbalism) as he can.

A traveling band of minstrels and jesters have arrived in town and the whole family went to see them, having a wonderful time. Corantin even caught the eye of a young lady in the crowd – perhaps something will come of it!

Corantin has accomplished something great! He has moved to the city and is now apprenticing with a prestigious chef who is known to supply food to the palace. It’s fortunate that he is able to live with Sebastian and his family while he saves up enough money for his own lodgings, though he is not there much because of the demands of his work.
- Madeleine is pick-pocketed while out picking up groceries, distracted by wrangling three toddlers and holding a baby. She and the children were unharmed, however, which is all Sebastian and her family care about though.

There is a minor epidemic in the town. Clarette, Emmelot, and Romain are all taken sick, but begin to rally again amid Thierry’s ministrations. Tragically, Clarette takes another turn for the worse and passes away. Sebastian and his family travel back for her funeral. Thierry is overwrought with grief and Mathieu is taking on most of the work at the apothecary while he tries to cope with his wife’s death.
- Sebastian and Corantin had an argument over traveling back home for the funeral. Corantin said it was a bad time at work, there being a feast in two days at the palace, whereupon Sebastian slapped him and called him an ungrateful wretch who better gather his damn things and show up to the house by that evening to leave or he would make sure he didn’t have a tongue to taste food with. Corantin was waiting at the carriage that night and attended the funeral (he was glad he did, of course), but tensions were still high between the brothers especially amidst their grief, and Corantin moved out of the house shortly after they returned to the city. Madeleine told Sebastian not to be distressed, that time would heal things between them once their tempers and stress over their mother’s loss had abated.

There is fear of war with England and all that seemed secure at one time in the town is shaken up, made seemingly worse for the Louet family by Clarette’s absence.
- In the city, Gabriel becomes ill with a fever, but recovers after a few weeks.
--- The twins are continuing to become their own little people. Valentine is enthralled with language and has convinced her father to teach her to read already, while Thomas is enchanted by animals and takes every chance he can to play with or rescue them.
Family end-of-the years roundup:
Thierry is still grieving for Clarette and doesn’t intend to marry again. He takes solace and delight in is children and grandchildren, as well as his work as always, though he is beginning give Mathieu more responsibilities in the apothecary shop in preparation for taking over for him in the coming years.
Sebastian and Madeleine are enjoying their place at court and their family. They’re happy with the number of children that they have, and aren’t attempting to have more, but the future will tell on that score. They are after all still young and in love and, well, babies happen.
Madeleine was right, and the two eldest Louet brothers patched things up. This was aided by another female influence…Madeleine’s sister Symonne, whom Corantin met when she was visiting and fell hard for (she has wavy, black hair and hazel eyes). He recognized in her a fellow artist, he with food and she with paint (though her family are gardeners she aspires to be a portraitist) and she cautiously-then-all-at-once fell for his bravado-y charm, and of course his cooking, and the pair just became engaged!
Mathieu is capable in the shop and loves the work as much as his father. He’s fascinated as well by all of the progress in medicine going on, much of which he’s discussed with the doctor’s son, Laurent, a young medical student of nineteen (with an arresting contrast of wavy, white-blonde hair and the darkest black eyes) whom he spends time with often, when he can. He hopes to be as good of an apothecary as Thierry and hopefully have a life full of love like his parents as well.
Alexandre decided not to become a eunuch to continue singing in the boys’ choir, but wants to continue singing and is thinking of either becoming a musical director (which might mean becoming a priest) or minstrel. Either sound good at this point, though his hormones are leading him toward minstrel. His siblings think he’ll land somewhere at neither extreme, probably on the stage.
Emmelot still draws, though she won’t be pursuing painting like her soon-to-be sister-in-law, Symonne. She’s happy to help her father and siblings around the house and is hoping to become a mother someday to a large family like her own, like her own dear mother who held everything together with strength and love.
Romain still enjoys the garden, and as he’s getting older and experiencing the sometimes meanness from other children in town, prefers it to going out in general. His father makes him exercise, though, and he continues to gain strength as he gets older, and he helps out as much as he can. He’s hoping to assist Mathieu with the shop in the future, and Mathieu likewise is interested in devising a devise that will help Romain get around better while still being mobile enough to do what he wants. Romain, loving nature and wildlife as he does, is the primary caretaker for the family’s magpies, who are firmly attached to him.
Ysabeau, the littlest, is starting to grow up, though her father hopes she doesn’t grow up too soon. She reminds him a lot of Clare. She’s spunky and still dances around, lighting up the family and making them laugh.
