Helia Volpe is the daughter of a basil farmer who lost his wife ten years ago from consumption, and when her father is put in jail on a life term for murdering a stranger in a bar fight she is left with little life skills and a farm as inheritance. She turns to her father’s closest friend and primary client, Daniele, for support, and after long nights of discussion she offers to marry this life-long bachelor and help him in his work so she may be housed. Daniele is reluctant, but he agrees, and they marry and sell the farm to move into a bigger house together. At the private ceremony the lord employing Daniele, Orazio Donà, gifts the couple his strongest horse and guard dog, Fortunato and Petro, for a strong start in their life together.

Their household unexpectedly grows when hear of a large import of foreign goods from all over the world coming soon, and when the goods arrive so does Daniele’s globe-trotting niece, Faustina da Riva Ragozinia, who settled in the capital of Muscovy for 3 years until her Eloijs died of alcohol intoxication after Faustina’s 40th birthday fest. A widow needing a break from the coldness of Muscovy and its people, she’s delighted to see her uncle again and would like to house with him and his “darling tiny” wife to enjoy Venizia’s warmth again since childhood.

Their dramatic year starts off with the death of their precious Petro of a cough that wouldn’t go away; a few months later the family is surprised with little Iordana, and soon after Aunt Faustina is exiled from the city for trying to blackmail a lieutenant.

They win by a slight margin, and win a good sum of money too that they decide to save.

Something miraculous happened this year; as happens every year, Mr. Donà invites all his acquaintances and staff to his home for a spring gala, and at this event Iordana saved the infant Bellomilla Donà from drowning in her father’s pool. Orazio says he can never thank the da Rivas enough for their daughter’s young bravery, and when Tomà is born at the end of summer the Donà family attends and Orazio talks of the pride he would have if the families were united in marriage.

Helia also found an interest in breeding pets, and she adopted Fina to breed mousing cats with Attilio. The family has also increased a good bit in wealth, and to secure the family Daniele brought home Bruno to guard, and then Savio to have a younger dog around to help him.

After an argument between him and his father over the fact that rodents don’t deserve to be fed, the boy promises to mind who he plays with in exchange for a new friend: Baldo Ardito, a puppy Mr. Donà graciously finds for him so that he’ll be energetic and patient enough for a child his age.

Mercurio shyly opens up to loving music like his older sister, but gets unconfident singing; after a few days of sitting in with Bellomilla Donà and her tutor he asks his parents for a cheap child’s harp. He quickly catches on to the task and plays for his sister, and the house becomes a pleasantly musical place. For Iordana’s birthday she’s given a lory to take care of with Mercurio; Guido can sing along with them and keep them responsible. The family’s year finishes off with the eagerly-awaited arrival of Leandra, a little girl with the same sweet face as her mother.

This year vastly changes life for the family. A home invasion in February is fought off at the expense of Bruno’s life and Daniele’s mobility - he is paralyzed from the waist down from being pushed off the fence from a fleeing invader. Mr. Donà hires a carriage to transport his lead cook to work, but after a week he can no longer work. In September, after yet another excommunication from the Pope, Helia returns from church with the children to find her husband dead; peacefully so, but he had an empty vial with him. Helia has been promoted to a cook in the Donà household a month before, but money is tight, and she wonders what the future has in store.

This first year is draining on Helia and the young ones: in spring a flood sweeps through their neighborhood, swamping their garden and killing old Attilio, which rooms their double income of fresh food and cat breeding. However, as summer begins Mr. Donà aides Helia by hiring her as a caterer for a large festival; the money helps greatly, and all her children have a great time dancing and singing along with the community. Tomà especially loved the theatrical scenes put on, and spent weeks after daydreaming of heroes and adventures.

In spring Leandra was discovered to be missing, and after an hour of stress Bianco found her in an alley cuddling two wet furry bundles; Helia cleaned them up back home and decided these abandoned kitten & puppy could stay with them; maybe she could raise Colombina to breed dogs next? A month later a neighbor mentions to Helia his disappointment in his daughter’s dog losing a leg to a spider’s bite, and Helia adopts him so Leandra will have a true family dog to accompany her.

One day in March Fortunato mysteriously dies - he appeared calm and asleep, but Helia found a stake deep in his ribcage. Her and her neighbors know that the young man down the road was spiteful of Helia after she wouldn’t sell the horse to him, and after a community effort to throw the man out of the city Helia was jailed. Mr. Donà had her released and welcomed the family into the home since their house was evicted; plus, the Donà children could use a mother figure after the death of their sickly mother in the flood years ago. The neighborhood is peaceful again - peaceful enough to not notice a baby’s cries on Christmas Eve.

The year starts off rather normally, given the last; the whole family hardly has to work, but does do spare tasks of the kitchen. Leandra is very predisposed to help, and follows her mother everywhere to help her in her second pregnancy in the household. Zacharia is accepted as a blessing, but his siblings still keep their distance from him and Ludovica. At the end of the year things take a twist, and the morning after Orazio berates a secret society he believes is undermining the empire Helia disappears.
