The Medvedevs welcome another baby boy! Vasilii Vladimirovich has straight light brown hair and dark blue eyes. Alyosha has begun learning to play the harp and greatly enjoys it.

There is a big festival in the town! Alyosha plays a piece with other harp students. Vanya has not taken to a musical instrument, for you can hardly get his nose out of a book long enough to watch Alyosha's performance.

A notice on the town bulletin proclaims that Alyosha's harp teacher has accepted a posting working for the duke. They worry for Alyosha's lessons, but they learn the teacher's oldest and most proficient student will be continuing lessons. Zhenya has not taken to either music or reading, but enjoys playing in the garden while Nastya works, so she hopes she may become interested in the future.
