Henry doesn't approve of her employment, but can't do much to stop her when he is away for long stretches in the forest.

Eden stayed healthy this year...though the rest of the local population didn't. A severe sickness spread through the area in the early fall, claiming many lives--sometimes even entire families. Henry's logging camp was quarantined for weeks, and Emelyn and Eden remained shut up indoors, avoiding contact with nearly everyone. Henry survived his illness and returned, very relieved that both Emelyn and Eden were never sick. A neighboring family, the Catesby's all passed away during the outbreak, except for six year old Bobby and his twin sister, Alys. Both children were ill, but recovered. They did their best bouncing from place to place for a few months before Henry convinced Emelyn that the children weren't a health threat and offered to take them in. Eden is enthralled with her new playmates/siblings, while Bobby and Alys are happy to have a consistent roof over their heads and good food to eat again.

Bobby, ever the troublemaker, got in trouble with the constables this year. He and his friends were making mischief and accidentally set a local barn on fire! The barn was a total loss and, fortunately, no one was killed (human or animal). Bobby has been working hard to pay off his debt (as have his friends), and he has been rather subdued lately--Emelyn is hoping the barn incident curbed his mischievious instincts just a little.

The local people were concerned this year when a popular traveling mystic proclaimed death and disease would strike their area this year. Henry, ever skeptical of these things, continued business as usual; however, Emelyn took the omen to heart and kept the children indoors and away from other families as much as possible. After the recent outbreak of disease a few years ago, most of the other townspeople did the same. The year has passed without incident, and Henry is still trying to convince Emelyn that the mystic was just telling stories.

Just after harvest, the area held the biggest festival Henry and Emelyn had ever seen! The kids loved it, and people came from as far away as thirty miles!

Emelyn has now decided that the mystic was right...at least about the death part. After torrential rains flooded out three quarters of the town, she and Henry lost everything. Fortunately, they were able to get everyone to safety--partially by riding Lady and Copper through the rising floodwaters. When the waters receded two days later, the people found several bodies of those who weren't able to escape in time. The attitude locally has been very subdued, as the people are still reeling from the disaster.

Henry competed in the logsplitting competition, like every year...and won, like every year.
Emelyn's blackberry pie won first place in the pie baking contest, beating out her major rival, Mrs. Huffleman.
Bobby won the boys footrace...which Emelyn totally expected, given the speed with which he disappears when he gets into trouble.
Alys won first prize in the girls sewing contest for her intricate sampler.
Eden also won first prize...in the spelling bee! She beat out boys and girls almost twice her age, much to everyone's surprise. Emelyn credits her large vocabulary to her extensive reading habits--Eden actually reads better than anyone in the family, and Henry takes her along when he needs to read and sign contracts for work.

Bobby was never built for the physical labor involved in lumberjacking, so Henry had been searching for a more suitable trade. Despite his mischievous tendencies, Bobby is very smart and has been enjoying learning his new trade.
