The long-suffering Queen Kitty died giving birth to her last child - and, as fate would have it, the child was born cold, blue and still. Nicholas' Princess Francisca disappeared in the night with her astronomy tutor. And Meg's eldest daughter, sensible, sociable Beatrice, had died of the measles, though not before infecting her cousin Valentina, who succumbed a week later. It felt, the Dowager reflected, as if she had sinned a previous life, and this was her penance. She would not be surprised if that was the case.
Oliver had gotten engaged again, which pleased the old Queen. She was a very unobtrusive princess - Danish. A little snooty, but a good match. Oliver didn't seem to care for her, still pining for what he had lost, as they all were. His new fiancée was not offended by this; she saw marriage as a matter of convenience, and the Dowager Queen thought that maybe if her family had had that attitude, they wouldn't have gotten into all this mess. Or maybe death hurts anyway. She couldn't know. She'd never not loved.
