A week ago, my mother called and told me that my grandfather, William Joseph Leighton, had passed away. Understandably, I was devastated. Adding to the matter was the fact that we were in the middle of pre-production on a film, and I was due to send in first drafts of the script. Fortunately, the producers postponed production and granted me a two-week leave to be with my family.
Since my grandfather died without a will, his estate automatically went to his only son, my father. But since my parents live in Seattle and don't want to move to the East Coast, they've given us the house instead. Jack and I are more than grateful, as we now have three kids and another little one on the way. We could definitely do with more space!
The house is in Cambridge, a suburb not ten minutes from Boston, so commuting to work isn't a problem at all. Emma, who is five and has just begun kindergarten, is excited that she didn't have to leave all of her old friends; since we live so close to the city, and also since Emma attends a private school, we didn't have to change school districts or anything like that. Emma has also made a new friend (not surprisingly). His name is Peter and he lives next door to us. Emma is so proud that she knows someone in the second grade.
When the twins were born, it was difficult to tell them apart sometimes. But now, two years later, they couldn't be more different. Hayden never seems to run out of energy. He absolutely hates sitting still, and if you put him in a chair, he is up and about again within two minutes. His favorite pasttime is going to the park with his dad and throwing (or attempting to throw) the football around. He is definitely a little rebel. I don't even want to think about what it's going to be like when he starts school.
Alec, on the other hand, is a lot quieter. I'm not saying that he's unlike his brother, because he too likes to get into everything and go to the park with his dad. But he'd also rather draw pictures on paper instead of on the walls. When it's bedtime, he'll fall asleep in ten minutes flat instead of getting up every two minutes to run around. Alec is much more subdued than Hayden, and a lot more curious. He likes exploring and finding things out. Jack once caught a spider in a jar (Emma and I, of course, wouldn't go near it), and Alec spent the entire afternoon watching it. I have a feeling he'll be the first to ask where babies come from, but I think I'll leave that for Jack to answer.
