I'm Esther Caroline. I've always gone by Caroline.
I've tried to warm to Esther very hard. I'm named after my great grandmother who came here to the US to escape pogroms in her town in Poland. She was only 8 and came with just her young sister. I'm proud to be related to her. I should be proud to share her name. But I just can't like Esther. It seems irredeemably ugly to me. Esther. It sounds like a noise you'd make if you were punched in the gut.
I guess I should thank my lucky stars I wasn't named after another great grandmother, Ethel. Shudder.
