[Games] Re: Royal Year Game
in reply to a message by saphirdufeu
I remember playing your previous royal game, and that one was a lot of fun! I'll try my hand at this one, too! Since my last one was so medieval, I'll start this one... later. (I also decided to roll for children, political, and family events to start off.)

H [41]: Kung Esbjörn Folke of Sweden (House Oldenburg)

Sweden hasn't been happy for... a few years now.
Kung Esbjörn, ever "righteous" in his conflicts, has ended his feud with his wife's finagling relations, which began over trade disputes. Sadly, House Hohenzollern had the upper hand in negotiations, and Sweden was forced to relinquish many of its silver mines - a huge blow to the morale of the Swedish people, as well as a loss to the kingdom's economy.
Does it feel good to be right now? That was a popular question whispered among the court, even among advisors - but never to the king's face. His sable hair, almost black, would be curly if he didn't keep it shorn closely against his scalp, adding to the severity of his pale skin, stiff rectangular jaw, and cheekbones that could cut glass. Not to mention the gray eyes that tended to stare straight through a person to his core. Some remarked that he would be a handsome man if not for his severity and lack of humor. Esbjörn was not even supposed to be the king - he'd had two older brothers, and a younger one. The second eldest had died from smallpox as a child, during a major outbreak in the capital. The youngest had fallen from his horse on his eighteenth birthday while attempting some sort of trick. And the heir to the throne, with a penchant for drink, lost a duel to Hertig Yngvi of Dalarna, who was captured trying to escape to Pomerania and originally sentenced to exile in the arctic reaches of the Empire. However, Kung Bertil fell ill in his depression and succumbed not two days after the Furste's funeral, leaving twenty-four-year-old Esbjörn in charge. His first order of business was to overturn the exile sentence, have Hertig Yngvi retried, and sentenced to death. After the execution, the Dalarna estates were dissolved and sold off, and the family exiled.
This established Kung Esbjörn as a man whom one did not cross. However, he also endeared himself to no one. But he wasn't going to be frivolous enough and let Yngvi live after what he'd done - after all, frivolity had prematurely ended the lives of two of his brothers.
After one year of being king, he secured a betrothal to Prinzessin Anselma of Hohenzollern, from the neighboring Kingdom of Prussia. Politically, economically, religiously, everything made sense. Except for the fact that they did not like one another. "Selma" had long flowing hair like honey, spicy brown eyes, and she clearly enjoyed the sun. Esbjörn couldn't seem to get her to take much very seriously, and Selma couldn't seem to get him to laugh. However, the papers were signed, so they married, to their houses' pleasure. It was an odd union, almost functional in its disharmony, its union of opposites. Of the two, Drottning Selma was far more popular among the people... even though she produced no heir after nearly a decade.
It was Selma who proposed a royal tour of the kingdom, going as far as to organize it in such a way that it wouldn't be too monetarily "taxing" for the communities at which they stopped to play host. They began in Småland, of course, and traveled up to Dalarna, where the king was least loved (a populous region). Then they went down through Lapland, Savonia, and making their final stop in the Åland islands - the lands of Esbjörn's cousin, Greve Fredrik, where he had spent many summers as a child.
Selma saw getting her husband out of the castle as therapeutic. Esbjörn saw this as a window to exactly what would bring his people out of the lurch: their copper. They had been so reliant on silver, but copper was everywhere! The same Swedish people could return to different mines and help enrich these lands again.
Additionally, neighboring Russia had experienced rebellion and strife in the previous years, and currently there was an infant heir with a regent. So Esbjörn saw his chance, and invaded the region of Karelia to claim it for Sweden, using a previous Russian promise to cede a fortress to Sweden as pretext. It was the most underhanded thing Kung Esbjörn had ever done, and resulted in an additional seven years of conflict that at one point nearly had his cousin, Greve Lasse, put on the Russian Throne!
But eventually, Russia surrendered most of Karelia to Sweden, adding to their coffers and increasing morale among the people.
Finally, this year, Drottning Selma gave birth... to a daughter. While the kingdom would vastly have preferred a son (Esbjörn's cousins, Greve Fredrik of Åland and Greve Lasse of Nyslott, looked as though they would be squaring off to take over after the king died... regardless of who he might name as his heir), Kung Esbjörn has smiled more since his daughter's birth than possibly ever before. Furstinna Carita has her mother's honey hair, though it already curls around her head, and her mother's dark, warm eyes. Selma was never the shrewdest girl, and she hopes her daughter will have some of her father's intellect - just, not his stubbornness.
Sweden still wants a Furste, though.
