Malcolm, a carpenter of the MacAldonich clan, taking after his father with curly dark brown hair with brown eyes, has taken the daughter of the herbwoman to wife. Eimhir Forsythe is a pretty young woman, who has been training in her mother's craft and assisting with births since she was a wee thing. She has her mother's striking hazel eyes and straight dark brown hair.
A terrible rash of thunderstorms hit the state in the summer, just after Malcolm and Eimhir were married. The local forest was damaged, hitting the lumber and herbs hard, making business tight for Malcolm, and difficult for Eimhir and her mother. Several buildings in town were damaged and Malcolm spends much of his time helping to repair.

It turns out the mild illness Eimhir befell at the end of last year was actually the symptoms of early pregnancy! She grows large with child quickly and she and her mother are concerned. As the pregnancy wears on, it becomes clear that Eimhir is carrying more than one child. A pair of twin girls are born in late summer. though they don't appear to be identical, they are quite similar looking. Both have dark brown curls, and as they age, their eyes darken to hazel.

The man works for the laird in his stables and cannot do his work with a broken arm. The laird changes Malcolm to pay for the loss of the man's work and scolds him for leaving his young family to spend time in drink. Malcolm is appropriately mollified and has to spent extra time making furniture for sale to make up the wages.

In the winter of this year, she becomes so ill and so short of breath that her lips are tinged blue. Only her mother and grandmother's knowledge of herbcraft get her through the illness alive.
