Lately if I've been listening to a lot of Nickle Creek, especially one song, Sweet Afton. Thus, I'm really starting to like Afton as a girls name. WDYT of it?

Afton 'seems' a bit unisex, but I've only seen it on girls (I know a little girl named Afton with an older sister named Savannah). It's somewhat of a guilty pleasure for me, I love it for a little girl. Maybe it "seems" trendy because of its similarity to Ashton? I do love it, though, just not sure I'd ever use it.

Afton is a Scottish river, is it not?

There is a poem by Robert Burns beginning:

"Flow gently, sweet Afton,
amang thy green braes,
Flow gently, I'll sing thee
a song in thy praise;
My Mary's asleep
by thy murmuring stream,
Flow gently, sweet Afton,
disturb not her dream."

So to me, Afton sounds poetic and romantic. Also "afton" means "evening" in Swedish. So besides the river, I associate to sunset.

So I like this name. And though I find it unisex, it seems that uncommon names are safer for girls, at least in USA. I'd choose Afton any day before Madison, McKenzie, Taylor, Alexis, Sydney, Morgan, Riley and other popular "girl's names".

I take my hat off to you, Ylva. I wouldn't know a poem in another language to save my soul. And I've studied foreign languages. Your education system puts mine (U.S.) to shame. Universal health care, child care, . . . the list goes on and on. *sigh*

Praise me ;)

We don't exactly learn poems by Robert Burns in school, it is just that I'm very interested in the old literature of England and Scotland.

But I agree with the universal health care and child care. I don't quite understand why most Americans don't want this. Of course, we pay by high taxes.

I think you answered your own question re: why Americans don't want this. We don't want to pay high taxes. (Well, in my opinion we already do - I just don't want them any higher!)

When I hear it, I think of Caryn and of the combo Afton Eve. :) It's not something I'd use, but I think it would sound neat on a little girl--I like it in theory. I bet I'd like it in practice if I met one.

And, of course, I can always appreciate a name from a song! :D

Afton sounds masculine to me, so I prefer it on a boy. In that context it's still not quite my style, but I wouldn't mind it on someone else's son, especially if it were a family name.

Are you thinking of Ashton, a traditionally male name?

Afton is the name of a river in Scotland or North England. I can never remember which. Personally, names from nature seem more feminine.
