Jem and Deanne currently live on an army base near Topeka, Kansas with their two teenage daughters. Neither daughter has any special desire to stay in the Midwest and both plan to move to California, but they have very different ambitions. The older daughter wants to study business in college and join one of the many startups in Silicon Valley. The younger daughter is very artistic, and loves punk rock and motorcycles. Both daughters have long, feminine first names and traditional middle names. Neither goes by their full first name- the older girl goes by a unisex nickname and the younger girl has a masculine nickname.

John and Roksana live in a small house in the woods of West Virginia. They met in the Peace Corps, and decided to build a little home away from the world in John's home state. Their children spend their days climbing trees, exploring creeks and being surrounded by nature. Roksana is an Orthodox Catholic, so their son's first name is the name of a saint. His middle name is used in both English and Russian. John named their daughter after his mother- her name has never been out of the US top 1000. Her middle name is that of a wildflower.

Robin and Farida live in a trendy neighborhood in London with their children. Robin restores antique cars and Farida is a pediatrician at a nearby hospital. They had their son through a donor, and recently decided to adopt a younger sister for him. Their son's first name is in the top 50 in the UK. He has two middle names, after each of his grandfathers. The first is an old-fashioned British name, and the second is Arabic. Their daughter's name is also Arabic, and her middle name is three letters.
