I guess I am surprised that most posters so far see Afton as being more masculine, as in actual use in the United States it seems to have been much more often given to girls since the start of the 20th century. I was actually surprised in checking the census records on Ancestry.com to see that during the 19th century it was more often given to boys, as everyone I have known of with this first name has been a woman.
I don't think of it as being "posh" at all myself. Indeed, in the 1940 census (latest available in Ancestry.com), 921 of the 2,130 Aftons were born in Utah, and another 230 in Idaho, showing that it was a name that especially appealed to LDS (Mormon) culture at during the early 20th century.

As a place name, it’s great. As a surname, it’s nice. As the name of a person, I couldn’t like it less. Trendy and snooty at the same time.
It’s one of my long term girl favourites. Besides the river, it’s the Swedish word for evening, so it makes me think of Scotland and heather and the highlands and highland cows and Sweden and sunsets all at once.

I can’t use Alba, but my GP twin pairing is Alba & Afton (“dawn” and “evening”)

Too posh and yet too close to Ashton to be posh at all. Definitely boy for me, very few -ton names strike me feminine.
Nice! I say boy.
Afton Theodore sounds awfully cuddly to me.
Afton Kai feels kinda hip and fun.
Afton Montgomery? Class it up a bit?
