D [13]: Elinor Thomasin Priddy, "Nell"Born in 1549 in Abertawe (Swansea), Wales to a local smuggler, Pawl ap Gareth Priddy never really had a chance to live a law-abiding life. His mother died in childbirth, and Gareth - who never talked about her - needed his only son to carry on the business of getting English goods to the Welsh past Cardiff without paying the heavy importation tax. Ensuring that his son would have even more success, Gareth made sure Pawl spoke English as well as Welsh. High risk, high reward: that was how the small Priddy house lived. This was until Gareth was killed one night on the docks, when Pawl was only twenty. Instead of taking his father's place helming the smuggling operation, and fighting the war with Gareth's second-in-command that was sure to come, Pawl sold the ownership and set off for London, England to make his fortune. There was only one problem, though: Pawl only really knew how to do illegal things. It really wasn't long before he turned himself into a moneylender in the city. As soon as he started signing his name "Paul," even the gentry went to him to fund ventures, from the innocent to the nefarious - for if there is one thing the rich and poor hate in equal measure, it's taxes. Paul Priddy's loansharking rarely dipped its toes into gruesome territory; nevertheless he made it clear, even at his young age, that he was not to be crossed. By the time he was 25, Paul had an empire of his own in the London underworld. That was when one of his henchman made an offhand comment about a family of his own. Paul had been alone for so long - and only with his father before - that he hadn't even thought about it. But the henchman was right: he needed a legacy. So he set out to look for a wife.Born in 1556 near a tiny village called Shurlock Row in Berkshire, Antigone Webster endured much teasing for her name. After all, the Websters were humble farmers, working wheat fields. Why did they go and give their only daughter some fancy Greek name? Well, it had been her mother Phyllis' idea. She already had a newfangled Greek name, but apparently Peter Webster was rumored to be descended from Antigone of Gloucester, granddaughter of Henry IV, through her grandson Humphrey Kynaston, the famous brigand. So Peter and Phyllis decided to resurrect the legacy with their daughter, much to Tiggy's later chagrin. The winter when Tiggy was eighteen, the Websters ventured to London to see about a loan to subsidize their rent, since their last two harvests had been poor and they do not wish to end up homeless. They stayed with one of Phyllis' cousins for a cheaper rate than they'd find at an inn, and were directed to a young moneylender named Paul Priddy.Paul had absolutely zero confidence that the Websters can pay him back. He tried telling them the interest will compound to levels they will never afford, and moved to turn them out of his office, when Tiggy made an impassioned speech worthy of her mythological namesake on her parents' behalf. Paul watched Tiggy and became fascinated. He therefore amended his assertion: he wouldthink on a deal with the Websters over the next week... during which he would like to get to know Tiggy better. The Websters leapt at this opportunity, while Tiggy thought it was absolutely ridiculous that her parents consented to her use as a bargaining chip.Over the next week in London, Paul essentially courted Tiggy - as well as he knew. He was too coarse to be a gentleman; then again, she was also too rustic to be a lady. And she presumably would be more tolerant of his profession than any well-bred woman. The Websters were ecstatic that the courtship went well. Before long, banns were posted and Antigone became Mistress Paul Priddy.A son was born soon after the wedding - a "sevenmonth surprise" (the midwife even joked, "Worry not, the first one's always early!") - named Owen Gareth, his middle name after his Welsh grandfather. Just over a full year after Owen's birth, they had identical twin boys, Nat and Ben. Another five years went by before the three boys were joined by a little sister, Nell, on whom the family dotes. The Priddies live in Covent Garden, along with a number of wealthy families who likely know Paul Priddy's profession but say nothing against it - after all, they might need him one day. And the family is well respected in his former Southward stomping grounds. Now it's time for the new generation to forge ahead.***Please rate my personal name lists:www.behindthename.com/pnl/69381
