Why Can't Things Ever Go According to Plan?King Geoffrey I... was going to kill his little brother, Percy. And when he was done, Queen Mother Edith would kill all the spots he hadn't. And then Prince David might join in the single-victim massacre for good measure. Meanwhile, the sisters laughed. Easy for them - they didn't have Wessex succession to consider!Percival had written that everything was just fine. He'd attained the post of Deacon, and was on the verge of receiving his holy orders and becoming a priest. He'd said he wanted to be a Cardinal, for God's sake! How was his family to know that nearly every day, he talked in the woods with the daughter of the local Baron Auchinleck. (What was it with this family and the woods?) Over the course of more than three years, Percy had fallen in love with Veronica; and when she turned eighteen, they faced a decision. Percy told her that he had renounced his claim to the throne - she replied that she had no interest in running a country, and also that he had several nephews in line ahead of him, anyway. He mentioned that if they had any children, though, it could complicate the line of succession - and she said she had never seen herself as a mother, anyway, and would it be so terrible if they didn't have children? He told her that no, it wouldn't be "terrible," but that she was young and may come to change her mind. To which Veronica responded that she was not one of his "flock," and he could stop patronizing her at any time. God, he loved her.So they married. In secret, with only one of Percy's colleagues to witness. On the morrow, when Baron Auchinleck discovered that his daughter had married without his consent, he was livid, and his first choice of action was to seek an annulment. It was the Prior of Durham who actually dissuaded him from this course, for two reasons:
1. Veronica had reached her majority, and thus did not legally require his explicit permission to marry;
and
2. Did he really mind the fact that his daughter was now a princess?Thus Baron Auchinleck dropped his reservations and embraced his new son-in-law. Percy abandoned his post in Durham and returned with his wife to Wessex, where he braced for Geoff's wrath for marrying without the king's consent. And oh, was Geoff wrathful. He had just gotten his house in order after their great uncle's betrayal and rebellion, and now Percy marries without consent of the king, leaves the priesthood, and complicates the line of succession? Percy gently reminded him that he has no interest in life at Court, and neither does Veronica, and they would be content to manage simple holdings. So Geoff resurrects the deed for a remote holding that had belonged to the Mercian crown, and passes that to his younger brother, effectively banishing him there. Percy is sorry they have to part on bad terms.Queen Aline doesn't understand why her husband is so upset over this. They have three sons who could inherit the kingdom, before any of his brothers would be considered! But Geoff reminded her to look only at his sister Eleanor to see how life rarely goes as one plans. And while Percy may have renounced his claim, who's to say, if he sires sons, that they will not try to assert what they perceive to be their rights? Everything could go to pot very quickly.Percy and Veronica stayed in the capital long enough to witness Princess Maria's wedding, when she became Countess Arundel. It was a pleasant affair, but wholly unlike the weddings of her siblings. There was little to no affection between the bride and groom beyond surface courtesies. Edith tried to ask her daughter if something was wrong - she had already given her daughter "the talk," as best she could - but Maria professed she was all right. However, she admitted to Percy that she had never felt attraction towards men, and wondered how she could be a good wife. So far they seem to be friends, but nothing beyond that. Five years on, and neither couple had borne any children.Nell, Baroness Atholl, experienced some tragedy in the intervening years. Yes, she had borne two more boys, Stephen and James; but before James' birth a case of smallpox broke out in the village near Castle Atholl. She was able to flee for a time with Stephen, and neither ever showed signs of infection, but her husband and two older children contracted the disease. Hugo survived; alas, Simon and Edmond did not. Thus her youngest child's birth was shrouded in so much regret that she named him for the brother she'd had who died as a child. As it stands, Hugo still bears a great many scars from the disease, and fears his wife finds him hideous.When King Charles of France had remarked that two children were enough, he'd spoken too soon, for Maud entered a period of unexpected fertility. First were the fraternal twin girls, Beatrice and Charlotte, who both look just like their mother (who in turn looks like her mother). Then Prince Lionel finally got a little brother in baby Quentin. The kingdom of France suddenly seems much more secure. Lionel had even been betrothed the the child-Queen Sophia (Sonja) of Norway, under the regency of her maternal uncle, Mark Gille of Bergen. She is the last of the House of Sverre, and her marriage to Lionel would strengthen the unity of Norway and France. Additionally, they would need to produce heirs for both countries once they married.As for Geoff, two betrothals have been negotiated for his children, as well. Prince Crispin - the first in line to the throne - was now betrothed to Princess Magdalene of Flanders, to establish stronger ties together against the Holy Roman Empire. As Geoff understood it, House Baldwin needed all the help they could get, though their urbanized resources were too good to pass up. As for Theophania, she had become betrothed to the young King Fabian of Portugal, from the mighty House Aviz. Phannie was actually thrilled, as she seemed to imagine him as a dashing bronzed seafarer. Queen Aline tried to get her to not get her hopes up, but she remembered what it was like to be fourteen. Faramond was perfectly content to wait to get married, as was Teodoric, while Amelia just thought it was gross because boys were icky. Mary, as a ward of the crown, kept her opinions to herself mostly.Prince David just wanted to get on a ship and sail far, far away from this land and discover new sights. Mary sometimes asked if she could come along, but David brushed her off.***Please rate my personal name lists:www.behindthename.com/pnl/69381
