[Opinions] Re: Top 10 for July
in reply to a message by PeachyGirl86
July is my birth month, so I think it's time for a bit of a hefty shake-up! Here goes...
Carmen / Carmela
Octavia
Ludovica or Lucrezia
Circe
Cybele or Cynara - which do you prefer?
Adelina
Xenia
Asherah
Sapphira
Trying to make combos with other well-liked names, aiming for theatrical rather than names I'd realistically use:
Carmen Elara / Carmela Frida
Octavia Beatrix
Ludovica Josephine / Lucrezia Fiammetta
Circe Melusine
Cybele Ottoline / Cynara Zenobia
Adelina Meredith
Xenia Hecate
Asherah Laurel
Sapphira Delphine
Eugh, those all suck... I'm in a name rut.
Elowen has fallen off, as although it's beautiful I don't think I could ever use it. I'm a bit bored of Mélisande, as pretty as it is. Zenobia is gorgeous but I am a bit out of love with it atm. Francesca is one of my true name loves, but I took it off as it has been there so long at number three, and it's gotten a bit tired.
Elowen, Mélisande, Zenobia, Francesca - would you save any of them?
Marisa has probably dropped off for reals, I'm not sure if it's all fluff and no substance?
My boys are all pretty solid favourites, and hard to 'shake up'. I knocked off the ones I don't totally love. That is... the last three. My top five never change because I pretty reliably love them.
Oscar
Jasper
Mathias
Roland
Magnus
Ozias
Casper / Caspar
Samuel or Samael (Samael feels a bit "edgy" but I like that it's different to Samuel and it speaks to me on some level)
Zoticus or Zebulon
Ptolemy (I dig that silent P, and it's gloriously weird and historic and kinda cool)
The fact that I feel I need to justify them means they'll probs be off the list next month, but they're a bit of a change, I guess...

What a fun list.
I prefer Cybele.
I prefer Cybele.
I like:
Carmen
Lucrezia Fiammetta (most Italian name I've ever seen)
Circe Melusine (!!!)
Cybele
Adelina Meredith (lovely)
Xenia Hecate (!!!)
Asherah Laurel
Sapphira Delphine
&
Oscar
Jasper
Casper
Shame to see Elowen go. :-( However, I believe your new assertion regarding Marisa to be correct (that, and I have a very negative association with Marissa so I'm predisposed to disliking the name).
Your combos don't suck!

Cybele is one of my firm favourites, it kinda ticks all my boxes - weird, not too modern, history / mythology behind it, eye-catching on paper and a pretty sound...
The issue is that everyone I've bounced it off of has either hated it, mocked it as too weird, and/or struggled with saying or spelling it. It was one of three names my ex explicately vetoed, which I guess could work for or against it.
I thought Cynara might be more accessible? It has a nice nature/flower association and looks more feminine. But actually, it might look a little either scientific/medicinal or made up? Like a kinda trendy kinda anagram version of Serena? I've always hated Serena, sadly, and might have just talked myself out of Cynara. Hmmm...

Cynara reminds me of "sayonara," so it doesn't sound like "a name" to me (whatever that means). It also reminds me of cyanide...
Cybele, on the other hand, boasts the mystique of antiquity -- I adore it!
