I've never known one and I don't think it ever reached the level of popularity in Australia as it did in the US. I think Derek is very handsome, strong, and solid sounding. I also like how it looks written on paper. I'd probably include it in a long list of names I'd consider using on a real child if I had to name said child with another person and therefore had to compromise.
I don't like Derrick at all though. I dislike how it's written and I say them slightly differently although it's barely noticeable. I like Rick as a nickname for Richard and Richard is another name I would include on a long list of names I'd consider using on a real kid. But Derrick just looks like someone tried to use a name that they could get the nickname Rick out of without using Richard.
