Elva, cause it makes me think of elves of the apritely little Santa's helper sort, while Alva reminds me of Thomas Edison and Hawkeye from MASH (I know Hawkeye was Alan Alda but the similarity is plenty for me).
I usually prefer Al* to El*, just because everyone is an Ellie these days, but I think Elva is just a touch more lovely.

Alva
Elva's cool colors (remote), sleek, more mischievous.
Alva's earth tones (familiar), hardy, more wholesome.
Elva reminds me more strongly of elves. I associate elves with: winter, trickery, magic, whimsicality. It also reminds me vaguely of Elvira, which makes it campy/vampy to me.
Alva reminds me of Alvin, which sounds nerdy, and a guy I know called Al, who is 6'4", burly, and affable. It also sounds Hebrew/biblical to me, which fits in with my style more.
I like both of them, though.
