Dear God, I can't stand that family.I actually like Gideon. I don't like Martyn, but since it's his dad's MN, I'm cool with it. I'm just glad they picked an actual Biblical name and not some dead missionary's last name like their nephew Spurgeon.

Why did they not spell it Martin? Its okay though, Gideon is nice.

Because Austin's middle name is also Martyn. Why would they spell it differently for his son?
vote up1
Oh, sorry. I didn't know.

I like Gideon, and won't comment on the spelling of Martyn, as it is honouring.I have to say, apart from Mackynzie and Spurgeon, the cousins aren't badly named at all.

Gideon is okay. It's NMS but there's nothing wrong with it. It's heaps better than Spurgeon. I'm afraid I can't get over that one.

I love Gideon. Martyn is fine considering it's a family name. I do like Martin after all. I just wish Joy and Austin weren't so young. I thought Jinger and Joy would be the first escapees.

A 'Duggar insider' recently did an AMA on reddit and claimed Joy is among the most conservative girls in the family. At least Jinger sometimes wears pants. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Can you please link the AMA? Did they verify at all (even if anonymous verification)?

The moderators did verify her identity. She's not super close with the family (hasn't been to any of their homes or anything) but does interact with them on various occasions.https://www.reddit.com/r/19KidsandCounting/comments/7z95bx/real_duggars/

Also...Holy shit! 10 pound 3?!?! Joy deserves a medal. That's one big boy. All the Duggar girls so far have had some big bubbas.

I have a feeling since they are in to all sorts of home birth woo stuff that they might not be treating gestational diabetes which can lead to large babies. Its just a thought, though.

I'm fairly positive that both Jessa and Jill were treated for GD with one or both of their sons. The Duggars aren't into as much "woo" as other fundie families. They do seem to vaccinate (they at least have no issues doing so for international travel to my knowledge) and they do engage in prenatal care for sure. The most advanced medical care around saved micro-premie, Josie. They might stubbornly keep going "home birth" but they've also shown no hesitation for hospital births and cesarians when necessary.

Ahh, okay. I don't follow them much but being a part of that homebirth stuff often involves a lot of other questionable birth and childcare decisions.

I dislike Martyn spelled that way, especially with the Y in the last name, but its a good name overall.

I LOVE the name Gideon! I hope this doesn't make it popular! :0

The Duggars have never really had much of an influence over name trends. They aren't quite mainstream enough and most of the time they're mainstream in a way of "look at these extreme people." The Duggars also have a tendency of picking pretty boring names in general. Gideon has been rising on a very steep trajectory in the US since 2000 and I doubt this baby will do much to increase or decrease that.

I dislike Martyn, but it doesn’t bother me as much since it’s an honour. I love Gideon, and don’t give him enough attention. Great choice in my opinion, and definitely better than his cousins’ names (so far).

I like it! Surprisingly good choice.

I was expecting them to go with something trendy so I'm really pleased with this. Love Gideon.

I love Gideon and Martin. Dislike the Martyn spelling. As far as the cousins go, I love Grace and Henry, I like James, Samuel, and Elliot, Renee, Michael, Marcus, Anthony, Meredith, Mason, Garrett, Israel, David, and Scott are neither here nor there, I dislike Mackynzie, Spurgeon, and Wilberforce (WTF).

Wilberforce is for William Wilberforce who was considered a Christian writer among other vocations- I don't know much about William Wilberforce's life except that he was a staunch abolitionist so not the worst namesake, however I don't know a lot about his life beyond that.Charles Spurgeon was the "Prince of the Preachers" and a highly influential Christian author and preacher. However, Spurgeon as a first name is pretty much the worst name I have ever heard. I wish they'd called him Charles Spurgeon Seewald. It would have been so so so much more palatable while making the namesake clear.I feel that Mackynzie was maybe a product of how young they were when she was born. They improved a lot post-Mackynzie when it came to naming. Jill has done the best job thus far though, in my opinion!

Mackynzie is an honoring name for Anna and Josh, after his cousin I think.

I love Gideon.

I'm pleased. Gideon is nice! I really dislike Martyn though and especially with that spelling but honoring is honoring...

I like Gideon but not Martyn, especially not spelled that way. Overall it's a pretty good name though.

Apparently Martyn is the father's middle name. I've added this detail into the main post.

Gideon is a name that I don't think I'll ever like. Eugh, its just so harsh sounding and unappealing to my ears... and I wonder why they spelled it Martyn? Not a fan of the name personally but congrats to them!
