Magda seems incomplete to me. That said, I actually love Magdala, more than Magdalena, but you almost never see Magdala in the real world. :-(
I love “clunky” names like this. Magda, Agnes, Agatha, etc. are some of my favorites.
I think Magda pairs best with a longer, more fluid, slightly frilly feeling middle:
Magda Celandine
Magda Cosette
Magda Celeste
Magda Alexandria
Magda Rosemarie
Magda Henrietta
Magda Ondine
Magda Viviana
Magda Christiana
Magda Estella

I don’t like it. It sounds kind of dated and dorky to me.
I prefer Magdalene or even Magdalena or something. Magda isn't necessarily bad though. I can see it somewhat usable I guess. It does make me think of my closest cousins whom I grew up with (They are siblings). Their initials in birth order actually spell out this name. Kinda neat IMO! (:
Magda Beatrice, Magda Juliet, Magda Lillian, Magda Vivienne sound the best to me.

I like Magda. I agree with your impression of it; I don't think it seems insubstantial at all because the sound is so assertive. Maggie is a nice possible nn but you wouldn't need to use it since Magda isn't very long. The combos I think sound/flow best are:
Magda Bryony
Magda Eleanor
Magda Eveline
Magda Guinevere
Magda Lillian
Magda Marguerite
Magda Muriel (I'm really into alliteration lately)
