[Opinions] Dustin
I've been swept up in Stranger Things fever lately, and while most of the characters have pretty normal (that is, normal to me) names, Dustin has really started to stand out to me. I feel it's probably a tad dated in the US, but as far as I know it's never been used in any great numbers in the UK. What are your thoughts on the name? Thanks!

I read somewhere that Dustin Hoffman was known as Dustbin as a schoolboy. And I heartily dislike Justin, so the sound and the look don't please me anyway. I'd avoid, except for a mn if you're really smitten.

It’s the name of my dad’s cousin’s son. He’s exactly one year older than me. He’s the first thing that pops into my mind when I hear the name. I don’t care much for it because it makes me think of “dust”.

Hi Jagoda !!!I've never thought seriously about Dustin. It reminds me both 'dust' and 'destiny' while the -in ending is friendly as in my language -ino/-ina are diminutive suffixes. My general impression is a bohémien name and this is positive imo.

All I can hear is dust, so it reminds me of someone who has a really dry mouth. Not the most pleasant image.

I used to love it - and even named a book character Dustin - but now it feels bland and uncomfortable.

I like it a lot. Yes, it's very much a US name, and it was most popular in the eighties, near as I can tell.

Ha, my first thought when I saw this thread was "Hey, has someone been watching Stranger Things?" :) Dustin's such a sweet kid, too. His name is... alright. Definitely somewhat 70s/80s here, riding the coattails of Justin but not horribly dated and I'd be pleasantly surprised to meet a little Dustin today. The main downside imo is that it allows for the nickname Dusty, which I don't like.

I'm very neutral towards this name. However, I prefer it to Justin which just sounds unbelievably wimpy to me. It's a bit dated, sure but very much usable IMO. I'm not keen on the nickname 'Dusty' though I do love that character. One of my favorites from that show!
The dust\dusty part stops me from really liking it.
I just think of some dust covered object in need of immediate cleaning and someone sneezing, coughing or wheezing from it. I guess the name has both a positive and negative association for me.

It had a period of popularity in the US, but it was never higher than #41. Consequently, it doesn't have an overwhelmingly dated feel to me. It's a little on the rugged cowboy side, but in a kind of muted way. I don't mind it. I don't love it, but I don't hate it.
