Don't read if you're triggered by mentions of miscarriage/child loss.
Meredydd plucked the arrows from the target in the back of the barn where he'd been showing off to entertain his children. Jolyon was hanging from his father's back and Cyril was begging for his own turn when they heard the horses arriving. The road was solid where it winded down into the valley and their steady gallops could be heard pounding over the earth.
Meredydd stepped out from the barn with his boys as they watched the small band of men riding forward.
"The King's private guard-" Meredydd said as he realized who was riding nearer. He dropped Jolyon from his back. "Go inside with your mother. Don't come out."
Both Jolyon and Cyril ran toward their small cottage as the riders swooped further down into the valley. When they'd made it safely inside, Meredydd bowed his head as the men began to come to a stop inside the stone fencing around his home.
"My Lord," their apparent leader called out. "Do not be afraid. We bring a message from your King."
Meredydd stood tall. "What message, Sir?" he asked, his voice as even as he could make it.
The horses parted and a rider who looked no different than the others rode forward. He stayed the animal and dismounted before looking Meredydd up and down. "Lord Meredydd Morin?"
Meredydd nodded. "Aye, Sir."
"I am Prince Casimir Brighthelm and your King requests your service in a dire time."
Meredydd looked confused as he searched the man's face. There was no war going on. Indeed, Prince Casimir's older brother had been the first King to bring peace to the land in Meredydd's lifetime or in the lifetime of his own father and grandfather.
"What does my King require?"
"Let us step inside, My Lord," the Prince instructed. "This is a very serious matter and it should be a conversation between you and your wife."

Eluned held Nadalia to her chest as she stared out the window where they'd watched the private guard ride away. The infant against her chest made a small whimpering sound and Eluned looked down at her. Between Cyril's birth five years before and the newborn they'd buried only days ago, Meredydd and Eluned had lost two sons and a daughter- all stillborn.
Holding Nadalia felt unreal. She had yet to hold the other child, but she was preparing herself to do so. When the Prince had told the story of their King and Queen's children, there had been an immediate feeling of compassion for the young royals. Meredydd and Eluned, along with their two sons, had agreed to do the immense task their rulers had asked of them: care for the newborn prince and princess without letting them or anyone else know of their true identities.
"We can't call you Nadalia," Eluned said softly down to the child in her arms. "No one's named such when they're simple unicorn farmers."
The baby made another sound as if to comment.
"We won't take your name from you," she told the newborn princess. "We'll shorten it. You'll be Nala and Bastiaen can be Basha. Those are names for children of a farmer."
She'd wanted to reject them at first, when Prince Casimir had originally begged them to take the children in. But after learning that the twins were in danger, she knew that out there was a young mother and her father heartbroken over the loss of their children. She knew what it was like to have a child taken from her and she and Meredydd had made the decision.
"Their abilities aren't dangerous," Prince Casimir had assured. "There are just those who fear anyone with abilities. They aren't safe so as long as anyone knows."
"We'll do everything we can to protect them," Meredydd had assured and Eluned had nodded.
Eluned walked Nala over to the crib where Basha rested. It was supposed to be for her own child, but she tried to settle in her mind this new opportunity she had been given as she settled Nala in beside her brother.
"Rest now. You're safe here," she told them as she looked over and met her husband's eyes.
