It used to be my nickname, given to me by my brother who couldn't say Laura when he was small. My name isn't Laura anymore (thank goodness!) but I still rather like Lola. I think it's got a good bit of sass and a lot of energy in four simple letters. I'm thinking you got it right as to why it's not popular though. I'd use it in it's traditional sense: as a nickname for Delores.
