[Opinions] Stephen & Martin
Hi,
If my husband and I have a son we would like to honor our Father's. Trouble is that their names combined is the name of none other than...Steve Martin the comedian! My husband has to problem with this but I do! I love Steve Martin but not enough for my child to mirror his name regardless of name position. Stephen Martin L., Martin Stephen L. ext. I know Martin would be the middle name but it still is Stephen Martin! More than likely his name will be David Martin. David is my hubby's middle name and I adore the name. I just don't like the idea of leaving my Dad out of this naming business. How do you choose between Father's especially when one is deceased? Any suggestions? Their middle names are just not usable Rudolph and Floyd! Thank you!!!

First, I love the name Martin. I also think Rudolph and Floyd are very useable, but I'm not a big fan of David or Stephen, so you and I likely have different taste in names.
I think if you did David Martin Stephen Last name it would work.

Also,
do you think you might have another child later? If so you could save either for that child (Stephen/Stephanie and Martin/Martina).
And this may sound a little callous, but I'd use the name of the one still living first.

I love Martin, Martin Stephen would rid yourself of the Steve Martin problem too. Not that I think Stephen Martin Last Name is much of an issue. Now, if Martin were the last name, then I'd definitely say to avoid Stephen.
Stephen and Martin are both very common names and I don't think the association is too overwhelming. In fact, I don't see why anyone would associate Stephen Martin ______ with Steve Martin (unless perhaps you actually call him Steve, but even then people usually don't say the nickname with the middle name, so honestly I think it's fine).
Anyway, I think its awesome that you want to honor both fathers! :)

I don't think Rudolph and Floyd are unusable; I like Floyd and Rudolph's not bad either-- they both feel a little more interesting and exciting that Stephen and Martin.
I guess if you're totally against using their middle names, I'd pick the deceased father's name-- surely the living one will understand wanting to honor the dead, and you can always use the other name on a second son (if you have another).
You could also consider using two middle names, perhaps burying the "unusable" (they're not) middle names.
David Martin Rudolph
David Martin Floyd
David Stephen Rudolph
David Stephen Floyd
(I don't know which middle name belongs to which first, so here's all the possibilities).
I also thought about David Stephen Martin or David Martin Stephen but I don't really like the flow at all

Either scrap the whole idea and exclude everybody equally or use the fathers' middle names, or one middle and one first, or your father's last name as the middle to your husband's father's first or middle name.
