To me Asa is masculine, as in the Biblical name. I've known two Asas, both boys, but I understand it can be feminine in Scandinavian countries. I think it's a lovely name for anyone.
We had an Asa at my preschool recently, and there was no issue of confusion with his name other than some mispronunciation. It suited the boy beautifully... he's a gentle, loving, quiet, strong boy.
The main character of the young adult book "What Hearts" is called Asa. I loved this book and character as a kid, and it gave me a love for the name.
