[Opinions] Dixie
I was reading in the archives (hooray for the archives!) the other day and posters were debating whether the name Dixie is racist. They talked about possible origins for the word and all that...
But now I'm curious. There are a lot more people here now. Without me offering my own, always biased yapping, do any of you feel that this is a racist name? Why or why not?

I don't think the name is racist, but I still do not like it because it's sound like a redneck/hillbilly name, and also makes me think of the Dixie Chicks, who I hate.
Well I live in the South and it makes me think of the song, which makes me think of the South, which makes me think of the Civil War.
I don't think it sounds racist. The first thought that comes to my mind when hearing it is Dixie cups.
I don't consider it a racist name, but I do think it's pretty tacky and cheesily southern.
I've never actually thought of Dixie as racist per se, although that may be because I'm from the north and never really hear of anyone actually being named Dixie. I knew a Dixi and my biggest complaint of her name was it doesn't sound very substantial, more like it's a nn for something bigger and better. Here Dixie is a recognzieable term for the South but I would venture to say Dixie makes people around here think about paper plates and itty bitty paper cups as much as it does the South.
I didn't really answer your question did I? And honestly, I have no idea what the etymology of Dixie is.
