After about a minute of dead silence, Violet began to laugh. Marina joined in, then Chloe. It was ridiculous. They were all going to have babies, all of them. How do things like that even happen?
Funnily enough, it was Violet who had managed it first. On a winter trip to Spain, she had hooked up with a British traveler names Bryce. She'd said goodbye to him forever when the bus trip he and his mates were on headed to Madrid while her and her group moved on to Barcelona. Shortly after new years, she realized she was pregnant. By the time she found the strength to tell her sisters - much less her parents - she was reduced to wearing oversized sweatshirts to hide that baby bump. She hadn't been thinking about having a child, but once she was pregnant, she fell in love. She was due in August, right at heart.
Marina was due next. She's started hooking up with Howard, a lawyer who she consulted on her podcast to comment on various subjects' legal woes, after she'd hosted a small party for her co-workers. He'd stayed later than other guests, one thing lead to another... And suddenly, they were sleeping together. She realized she was pregnant at the end of January and was due in early September.
Chloe was due just a few weeks after, in early October. She felt awful about the circumstances leading to her child's conception. Despite spending her whole life preparing for a baby, she could barely shake the feeling that she'd already ruined his life. She'd told Miles right away. No point in hiding it. Her news had been gotten a lukewarm reaction at best, which made her feel like she'd felt right before the divorce all over again.
Seeing Chloe's suffering made it easier for Violet to steel herself and ask a question she really didn't want to ask - could she move in with Chloe? Chloe had gotten the house in the divorce and had the room, and Violet could really use the help while she did another thing she never wanted to do - find a permanent, stable job. Chloe gladly welcomed her sister into her house.
By July, things had stabilized for the sisters, who were all doing relatively well in their pregnancies. Violet had landed a job in a boutique baby store in city (all three sisters eagerly utilized her employee discount). Chloe was greatly comforted by having Violet in the house and had started seeking a therapist to resolve her feelings of guilt and failure about the divorce and the pregnancy. Lucas and Athena threw a joint baby shower for all three girls. It was a lovely night, filled with good food, laughter, and lots and lots of gifts. Everyone when to bed exhausted, only to be woken by a call in the middle of the night.
Marina - not due for another seven weeks - had been about to go to bed when she realized she didn't feel right. After about half an hour, she realized she was having contractions and immediately called her dad to take her to the hospital. Throughout the next few days, doctors tried to use drugs to delay the labor, but on July 26 they could delay it no longer and her son, Amos Ash Wheelwright, was born, 4 lb 2 oz. Despite being early and small he does relatively well - breathing completely on his own within two days, and eating like a champ by the end of his first week. After fifteen days, he was home! But the experience filled Marina with lots of angst, both because she felt her body failed and because Howard, her son's father, only visited once throughout the whole ordeal. She knew when she decided to keep the baby she would be a single mother, but once Amos was born she realized she was alone. It lead to her making another life altering decision - leaving the podcast she'd help found. She'd been toying with the idea anyway, knowing it would be hard to travel for stories with Amos, but after her experience in the hospital, she knew never working with Howard again was the right choice.
Within days of Amos leaving the hospital, Violet was admitted. She'd had lots of anxiety about the birth, her anxiety about complications only heightened by her sister's experience. But luckily, her labor was textbook. Her water broke early in the morning on 8/12, and twelve hours later her daughter, Gaia Whirlwind Wheelwright, entered the world. Lucas and Athena raised eyebrows at the name, but it seemed perfect to Violet, who wanted her daughter to have the strength of a goddess, and who had certainly been a whirlwind in her life.
After seeing her niece and nephew born, Chloe felt more than ready to join them in motherhood. She waited. And waited and waited, each day growing more uncomfortable as she suffered through the typical late pregnancy uncomfortableness. Finally, two weeks after her initial due date, she went into labor. She crossed her fingers for a labor like Violet's, but no, hers dragged on and on. Almost thirty-six hours and several epidurals later, Chloe finally gave birth to her son, Lynden Theodore Wheelwright-Flynn, early in the morning on 6/5. She was immediately in love. Miles came to visit shortly after. Despite their divorce and initial ambivalence towards her pregnancy, he was shaping up to be a decent father. She didn't want him back, but seeing him hold their son made her feel completely at peace for the first time.
