I'm usually in the minority, but I don't like Robin for a boy. I find it not strong and masculine enough, though I dislike it on a girl, also. I always wonder if (an American at least) male Robin will encounter difficulty because of having, and resent having, a "girl's name". I've never known a male Robin.

I don't think it would be automatically shortened unless it were by Robin himself who would prefer the more masculine Rob.
