I like it. Robin is one of those rare names I view as actually being unisex. If I were to use it I would use it for a boy and nn him "Robbie" or, Rob I guess. I don't mind those. Of course that is all hyperthetical since Robin is unusable for me.
I don't think it would automatically be shortened. I've known 2 Robins that I can recall (one male, one female) neither of them went by a nn. They were always just refered to as "Robin"
