I don't think it seems like a good name for a woman. Some names that would seem spunky on a girl can seem dumpy on a woman and I think this is one. It's too similar to the word gruff and to other surnames like Griffith. The iff sound in a feminine name makes me think Tiffany, also. Griffany

Maybe if you spelled it Gryphon. That's much more evocative to me, much less of a gruff surname-name and more about the mythical animal. That would make it seem cool even on a grownup.

Needs a middle name that isn't too girly or traditional, because the contrast would be droll.
